(SNES) Myles Standish and Other Delights

Hi Dave,

Lots of mare's tails up there over Webster right now, but I'm hopeful for a
little observing after 10PM. :o)

Here at SNES it is my firm belief that you'll see no "wars of words" over the
merits of ANY observing site. Just factual observation reports. (Let's face
it, the best site you most often have available is your own back yard!). I've
observed twice at Myles Standish, and found it to be quite dark, though very
buggy and damp when I was there a couple of summers back. But FDO can
certainly be that way too. I have heard that MS suffers from frequent fogs. I
expected that at FDO also, but in about 35 or 40 nights down there over the
past year I can recall fog being a problem only once. (Of course, none of us
ever venture down on the really murky nights!)

Those south of Boston will certainly continue to be drawn to MS. It has dark
skies to the E and SE. Large cities are within 20 to 25 miles in all other
directions, however. This is where FDO has an advantage, in my opinion,
mostly because SE, S and SW are nothing but open ocean. And that's the
direction most astronomers spend most of their time looking - so it works out
just fine!

>From where you live I guess FDO is a half hour farther away than MS. (For me
MS is about 80 miles). But I do hope you'll find your way down to FDO again
soon. The skies are fine, yes, but I also find the facility, the equipment,
and the people are a tough combination to beat.

Anyone know of any other comparable sites our members should give a try?

Good luck out there,
Doug Stewart
