(SNES) Observations at Myles Standish

WOW! What a night!

I was out amongst the gods and the heavens.

I saw some very faint and remarkable objects last night.

Jones 1 in Pegasus: HUGE planetary 332" in diameter. Surface brightness about 16.6 but visual mag was 12.1. Very large Pne. Could only see and find in 32mm Erfle with OIII filter. Very round, could not see all of it in EP, but using averted vision, and looking all over EP field, I could see sectors of the shell of gas.

CRL 2688, the "Egg" nebula: Cool looking Proto-planetary! In Cygnus, near the Coccon and the Veil. 2 Lobed planetary, one lobe bigger than the other. UHC or OIII not usable on this one. Moderate size, out of focus star like, comparable to bright field star for visualization.

Merill 2-2 in Lacerta: Stellar Pne. No detail, less than 5" in diameter.

Humanson 1-2 in Cygnus: Little Dumbell. Looks like a little Dumbell nebula, but in a 8.3" diameter shape. Somewhat pronounced at 300X. Averted vision definitely showed 2 trianlge lobes.

Minkoski 2-9, the "Butterfly" I had looked at this previously a few weeks before. 2 lobes straight out on either side of a pinpoint star. Visual mag is 14.5, with averted vision, both lobes visible. Looking at the star, discerning view as if star intersects lobes, but averted vision seems to show lobes attached to star. Some have seen the lobes separated from the star. Requires more aperature. Size is 16" x 9".

Other notables were M22, M4, NGC 6444 globular cluster (next to Antares), M6, M7, Lagoon, NGC 6818, PNe in Sagittarius, very large and very bright, 2 bright meteors, Comet Linear A2: stellar nucleus, near 2 fainter stars, not quite bright enough to see unaided, NGC 7331 and companion galaxy 7339, 4 members of Stephans Quintet.

Thats about it, skies were dark, fog free and quite transparent. Naked eye visibilty was 6.0. Temps dropped to below 50 but still stayed stalwart in shorts and sweatshirt. Local Boy Scout troop visited for astronomy merit badge.

Arrived at 8:30pm, left at 2:30am.

Charging battery for power hookups as I write this. Looking at blue sky and warm temps for observing tonight. Hope to be at FDO by sunset, thereabouts, wife may be in tow.

Finally a place to write my observations without getting looked at funny...LOL

See ya guys later!

Dave
