(SNES) AOL and Hubble
Hi Group,
This morning's welcome page when AOL users signed on contained some nice
pointer links to the Hubble Space telescope, its workings, its
accomplishments, etc. It also included about 9 small scale images taken by
Hubble, including the fabulous photo of Mars from about a month ago.
Unfortunately, in true AOL fashion, one of the photos is misidentified! What
they list as spiral galaxy M51 (the Whirlpool) is actually the edge-on galaxy
NGC4013 in Ursa Major. Oh well, so much for astronomy education.
By the way, to my FDO friends, it is pictures like these (seen often on AOL
and eleswhere) that cause our public to have unrealistic expectations of what
they will be able to see in FDO's 16" scope. This is especially true of Mars;
that great photo was all over the media in recent weeks, and many visitors
wanted....expected......to see something just like it at FDO!
Well...............we do our best! :o)
