One reason is field of view.  The 16" tops out at just over half a degree.

Ernie, Les and I were going nuts looking for the Rosette one night.
It took us a while to realize that we were looking right down the
middle of it, and we had to pan around to see it a piece at a time.

Ernie's a big fan of "fast" scopes which makes a lot of sense if you
like the big, diffuse nebulae.
