(SNES) "LONGITUDE" a cloudy evening's read
What a fantastic book this is. And what a cast of characters, Galileo,
Sir Isaac Newton, John Flamsteed to name a few. Also a name I have never
heard of before, John Harrison. ( I went to public schools)
This guy Harrison was a real piece of work, imagine making a clock out
of wood (that's wooden "works", also the damn thing still works after
almost three hundred years.) that was self lubricating. This was an
amazing feet considering he didn't have any formal training in the clock
making trade. On top of that, it was most likely that he never saw a
clock or watch to study before he made his famous chronometer.
Also interesting to note how the search for longitude sparked the
imaginations of astronomers and mathematicians, paving the way for
mapping the stars and developing the mathematical tables to track the
"sky clock".
Great read and a good book for the home astronomy library.
