Re: (SNES) Question (BOOK)

Thanks to all who replied to this thread.

I did pick up a nice copy of "The Earth and The Stars" by Charles
Greeley Abbot for $6.00. What attracted me to it was the several B&W
photos within its pages from the Lowell Observatory, Mt Wilson
Observatory and Lick Observatory all taken before 1925.( plate 23 is a
great photo of "The Great Star Cluster in Hercules" aka, M13) There are
also some good photos of the telescopes at those observatories as well.

Another point of interest as already pointed out is seeing how much
knowledge we have collected in the years since the publication of this
book. Imagine there is no mention of Pluto. Jupiter and Saturn only have
9 moons apiece.

Anyway I was curious to know more information Abbot who at the time was
the Secretary, of the Smithsonian Institution and the Director of the
Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. (It seems his name is on alot of
books that have nothing to do with astronomy.)

Another point of interest in the book that caught my eyes was in
Appendix A. This is an observation report of sorts about the Solar
Eclipse of January 24, 1925 (BTW the book opens with a nice photo of
this event most likely because of Abbots interest of Solar observing)

In this report Dr. S. A. Mitchell reports that, "A new method of
observing was undertaken by the United States Navy. The great dirigible
balloon, "Los Angeles" ascended and occupied a station off Block Island,
at an altitude of about a mile, during totality.) (to photograph the
eclipse) BTW, it was to windy to stay on station so the motors of the
great airship had to be used thus creating to much vibration to get good
photographs from the dirigible.
