Re: (SNES) Harry Siebert Eyepieces

Hi Barry,

<>

Yes......you have to use a jaded eye when reading some of these reviews - to
separate the facts from the enthusiasm. Siebert's products are certainly not
state of the art, but represent good value for your dollar.

I would concentrate on getting eyepieces with good eye relief - they're so
much easier to use, especially with a scope that you have to keep nudging.
Also important is the apparent field of view, since wide fields keep your
object in view longer without sacrificing magnification. For most of your
observing with your XT8, even with the right eyepiece, you'll probably be
most comfortable at 200X or less - higher power isn't really necessary on
most objects anyway, except for splitting very close double and multiple
stars. This is why you were so pleased with the Meade Ultrawide 6.7mm in my
eyepiece box. In your scope it produces 180X and its 84 degree field yields a
true filed about 50% larger than the field of your 9 mm Plossl - which
produces only 133X. But of course, there's the price factor. The 6.7 mm lists
at $200. For that you could get a whole set of Sieberts.

See you soon,
:o)
Doug
