(SNES) The Sun is where? ....and a little quiz

Hi All,

Not everyone realizes this, but in addition to the 12 constellations of the
zodiac, the Sun also travels through two others. One of them is where it has
been for the past 12 days: Ophiucus. It actually spends 17 days there after
leaving the much better known Scorpius, where it resides for only a brief
week. I guess in olden times not many people recognized poor Ophiucus! Even
for those of us who do, that area of the constellation looks like it really
should belong to Scorpius anyway. :o)

The 14th constellation is a bit of a teaser, because the exact center of the
Sun doesn't (currently) enter it. However, a portion of the Sun does pass
through a corner of Cetus, over an 8 hour period, on the night of March
27/28.

Yesterday I was commenting to my nephew about the fact that we have now
passed the earliest sunset of the year (4:17PM). The latest sunrises come in
the first week of January (7:09 AM), with the shortest actual day being
December 21st, the winter solstice. My nephew asked why the one month lag
between earliest sunset and latest sunrise - and, boy, I had to think about
that for a moment or two before offering an explanation. Can you explain this
phenomenon?

Hoping for some clearing Friday night,
Doug Stewart
