Hi Dave,

Last night Jupiter was only 2 days from opposition (it occurs at 12:52 AM EST
on Tuesday, 1/01/02), so Io's shadow was VERY close to the moon, just to the
west. You (and we) will get another chance for a similar Io transit next
Saturday night from about 6 PM to 8 PM. This time, four days past opposition,
the shadow will have shifted to the moon's east, and will be just a tad
farther away from Io than last night.

The previous night, Friday, 1/04, we'll be able to watch both Ganymede and Io
be occulted by Jupiter and then reappear a couple of hours later from
Jupiter's shadow.

All we need, of course, is some clear skies! We'll be watching the Friday
show from FDO if the weather cooperates.

Enjoy!
Doug Stewart
