(SNES) Harry Potter and Sirius Black
Hi All,
Among our 68 guests at FDO last night were Marie M., her son Alex, and their
friend Rhyanna. Alex had just received a new telescope for Christmas and had
been eagerly waiting his first chance to get down to the observatory to try
it out and pick up a few pointers. He had also been paying attention to our
FDO staff updates, as he asked about the "big rock" that was currently
whizzing past Earth. That, of course, is the newly discovered Earth grazing
asteroid 2001 YB5, which may have been visible
in FDO's 16" scope last night - if only the skies had remained clear. (They
were mostly clouded over by 8 PM, before the asteroid was high enough to
track down).
Anyway, Marie made a reference to the Harry Potter books, involving the star
Sirius. Here is Marie's message:
<<Just wanted to let you know that Alex's first night with the telescope was
a great success. I did need some assistance and Ernie was kind enough to
help. He spent the entire time we were there finding interesting things to
look at and then went on to explain. It was a great experience for Alex,
Rhyanna and myself. I think we were even able to teach Ernie something which
I'll share with you for future use with the children 10 and up. In the third
book of the Harry Potter series The Prisoner of Azkaban there are four
individuals who are able to transform into animals. One of the individuals,
who is in fact Harry's long lost godfather, can turn into a dog. His name is
Sirius Black. When Ernie pointed out the dog star Sirius it really made a
great impression on Alex as we are just finishing that book. Hope you can use
that information about Harry Potter in the future. The cold did get to Alex
but it won't deter us from next weeks viewing.
Marie >>
On behalf of everyone at FDO, Marie, we're glad we could help. And we'll
certainly use the Sirius Black reference in the future during our astro talks!
Hope to see you all next Friday,
Doug Stewart
