Thanks! Malin is at the top of my pantheon, along with E.E.Barnard and
William Herschel.
Malin blazed the way in many respects but now spends his time travelling
and lecturing. He has not been maintaining currency in the field of
astro imaging. Films, scanners, and digital image processing have come
a long way in 20 years. And not to mention CCD and adaptive optics.
A friend of mine spent months creating a high resolution film mosaic of
M42, which in my opinion is the all-time best rendering of M42 using any
medium. It was published in S&T last year:
