hosted by the astronomy club of North York, Ontario and is known as
StarFest.

Hi Lew,
I certainly wasn't intending to slight our Canadian friends! StarFest is a
well established event, and certainly plenty big. All the more impressive
when you consider that it's not really in a dark sky location (in
comparison
to the far west), and the weather (as at Stellafane) can be maddening!
The benefits of Ninigret Park and its facilities are numerous - and its
skies
remain VERY dark. Camping is currently permitted at just one event per
year,
the Rhythm & Roots Music Festival over the Labor Day weekend. So it is a
possibility, but there is the Town of Charlestown to deal with on that and
other issues - they own the place after all. And FDO, not being a typical
astronomy "club", has limited staff with which to plan so large an
undertaking as a regional star party.
Still, if we were to join forces with some other southern New England
astronomy
groups I see no reason why Ninigret Park couldn't be home to a great astro
event, within an easy drive for everyone in the region. It would also be a
great way to concentrate public focus on the dark sky issue so near and
dear
to all of us!
Thanks for the feedback (the first, by the way), and we'll keep you posted.
:o)
