Re: (SNES) The Great Star Parties
Hi Everyone,
Actually if we held a star party, it would only be fitting. FDO was
founded as a byproduct of a series of star parties on the grounds of the
Frosty Drew Nature Center. This suggested to George Bliven (President of
the Frosty Drew Memorial Fund) and Dr. Bill Penhallow (URI Professor of
Astronomy [now Emeritus]) to collect funds to erect the Observatory's
Dome. A number of loaner telescope's were housed in the Dome until we
got our first permanent telescope - the 7" StarFire.
We need a good name for the event. Somehow "Star Party in Ninigret Park
in Southern Rhode Island" doesn't come trippingly off the tongue. What
comes to mind is something like the SeaStar Party.
I'd be all excited about getting involved if I wasn't up to my neck
right now with the Sky Theater. For example, this week we get the final
architected drawings and we'll hold a session with the builder. All of
this acting on faith alone because so far we don't have enough money in
hand to actually build the place [although we are making progress].
Meanwhile we are watching over our shoulder to see if the Town of
Charlestown really does pull out of the Chariho School District.
