(SNES) A worthwhile trip to RI
Hi Everyone,
This week, prior to heading down to FDO, I dispensed with our usual email
give-and-take, and decided to place all my faith in the weather forecasts.
This meant that I might be the only one to show up, of course! Fortunately,
others employed a similar
strategy and we ended up with quite a respectable session, as the log will
reveal.
As usual, the skies were changeable - more so than the predictions had
indicated. So we ended up heading home much earlier than normal. But it was
enough to enjoy the fine conjunction of the Moon and Jupiter - a splendid
sight in telescopes small and large. Even in the 16" we were able to gaze at
both at once, as the Moon made its closest approach around 9:45. Out in the
yard a visitor with a new Orion XT 4.5" Dobsonian also had a spectacular
view, as its wider field of view easily took in both the Moon and Jupiter
with room to spare.
And amazingly, even with the bright moonlight, several of us enjoyed a look
at the fine spiral galaxy NGC 2903 in Leo. Nothing like the view that Les and
I had two weeks ago, but still quite respectable - a tribute to the 16"
scope's great light gathering ability.
Driving home, the skies remained solidly overcast all the way to Danielson,
CT. Then, as though someone had drawn back a curtain, everything suddenly
cleared up and stayed that way. Figures!

The FDO log will have all the details shortly, but I thought I'd post some
comments about tonight's session.
