Re: (SNES) The Great Star Parties

Researching other events makes sense. You have to be prepared. With almost NO NOTICE, we had about 100 people show up for the Leonids. If we advertise in the astronomy newsgroups about a party we could find ourselves overwhelemed. I always remember Dr Leslie Brown - Professor of Astronomy at Conn. College. They had a event where 3800 people showed up and literally became such a problem that the college had to call the State Police for help. She never expected such a crowd.

Planning, coordination and lots of other groups are the key to a good event. Being as lucky as we were with the Leonids won't happen often. We had an unexpected crowd but a wonderful bunch of people.

Hi Les,

I missed this message earlier, as I had already left for FDO. So when you mentioned the moniker "SeaStar Party", it was the first I'd heard of it - and I must say it has a pleasant ring! It would certainly embrace the natural surroundings of our state, and would be easy for all to remember and identify with. VT has Stellafane; RI has SeaStar!

Because of the organizational effort needed to get a major star party off the ground, I see this as a necessarily regional event. A starting point might be doing a bit of research on the experience of other groups around the country. How they got started, what obstacles they came across, etc. I'd be happy to look into this. Once we've done some background work we could get feelers out to the other clubs to gauge the level of interest.
Thanks for the name suggestion - I bet it'll stick!
