Re: (SNES) Dew Shields

Ernie

If you are near 120V AC, another option is a hair dryer. We have one at FDO. It takes very little extra heat to pass above the dew point usually. I wonder if a small heater of any sort would work - maybe a hand warmer. Does anyone know? Of course heated shield waste very little extra power and if you have an adequate battery pack, it is the way I would go.

Hi Ernie,

The passive shields work pretty well on most nights from late fall through early spring when the air tends to be drier. However, you can't beat the heated models as they completely eliminate the dew problem at all times of the year. I have both for my C8 and use them according to conditions. If you're buying just one, I'd opt for the heated models - Orion, Kendrick, etc. The Schmidt-Newtonian corrector is likely to be very prone to dewing up - even more than the shorter tube SCTs.

Hope to see you this weekend if we can all manage to get together,
Doug
