(SNES) Rockin' and Rollin' in New England
Hi friends,
Well....how many of you were awakened this morning (as I was) by the
strongest earthquake to hit these parts in quite a long time? At 6:52 AM,
sleeping soundly, I awoke abruptly to what sounded and felt like a freight
train rumbling through my yard. The whole house was shaking and items on
shelves were rattling together. Despite my half-awake status, it was clear
that this was no dream - we were having an earthquake!
The vibrations continued for only about 15 seconds, but there was no way I
could do more than doze after that - I had to find out just what had
occurred. Sure enough, when I tuned in CNN at about 8 AM they were talking
about the quake. It was magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale, and was centered
near Plattsburgh in upstate NY, 200 miles from my home in Webster. It was
felt as far south as Baltimore, MD, but evidently caused no significant
damage anywhere.
So although I've felt very minor tremors here in New England over the
decades, this was the first "real" quake I can recall - one that you could
both feel AND hear. Of course for you folks who have spent time in the
western states, today's jolt would hardly be worth noting. But here in New
England, where large quakes are rare, it was still a remarkable experience,
and a great demonstration of Earth's active geology!
