Hi Everyone,

Greetings from (un)sunny Florida!

I hope that you all get some decent observing in tomorrow night - it seems
like it's been a really slow time up there for FDO what with poor weather and
staffing issues.

I just came in after getting my best ever look at the Hubble Space Telescope.
It passed 85 degrees high from west to east, at about magnitude 1.5, but
briefly outshone Arcturus - as a bright section on the scope "flared". From
Charlestown the HST would have been only 12 degrees up and a dim magnitude
3.9, according to Heavens Above.

The summer monsoon arrived here in Florida on the night of 6/14 - when we
received 5 inches of rain in 7 hours. Since then it has rained hard at least
once each and every day, as thunderstorms crop up with little or no warning.
Our area has received something like 20 inches of rain in that 13 day span!
Needless to say, no one is talking drought down here any more!

With all the humidity and rain, the observing chances have been few and far
between. One plus is that the cloud cover has kept daytime temps in the mid
to upper 80's, rather than the more typical 90's. On the other hand, in the
month I've been here the lowest temperature I've seen is 71 degrees!

I hope that with a little help from Mother Nature you can get back up to full
speed at FDO really soon, and I look forward to reading the logs once more.
Good luck to all - I'll let you know how things are doing down here as well.

Missing you all,
Doug
