Actually, it was the boy's step-mother who was the architect and designed
the observatory for him.

The article troubled me because I believe it did a disservice to astronomy
by portraying it as a rich man's hobby.  With statements like "... today any
enthusiast can buy a high-quality telescope for about $20,000" and
mentioning the Ravetch's "weekend house in Chatham", it gives the impression
that astronomy is only for the wealthy.  It is telling that the New York
Times deemed to print this article under the Home and Garden section.
