(SNES) S&T Celestron Article Sept. Pg 24

Hi Everyone,

I was greatly interested in the Dennis Di Cicco and Alan MacRobert article
on the corporate fate of Celestron. I have no particular axe to grind in
this debate, but since Celestron and Meade just about dominate the moderate
range of Schmidt/Cassegrain telescopes between them, whatever affects them
has a real impact on my favorite pasttime.

Briefly, the ill-starred (disasterous) miss marraige of Tasco and Celestron
is over. Tasco has gone into
default on its loans and is being auctioned off. The prior management of
Celestron has purchased Celestron away from this break-up.

[WARNING: What follows is a personal diatribe by yours truly against the
arch fiend of the telescope makers the Tasco Corporation.] I do not think
that any single manufacturer has done more to put low quality unuseable
telescopes on the market than the pre-merger Tasco. To be sure Celestron
pull the average quality of the joint company's telescopes up, but anything
with a Tasco label which appears at FDO is ususually in the hands of an
unhappy camper. A Tasco in your eye will cause more severe problems than
Tabbasco in your eye. [End of private diatribe against Tasco].

Meade has wanted to buy Celestron repeatedly. Currently they are locked in a
patent battle. Look for more there soon.
