Re: (SNES) Star hopping / Offsetting

Hi Gary,

In one concise paragraph I feel you've summarized some of the best reasons
for BOTH approaches to observing. Each has its place, and the experienced
astronomer uses both regularly. I agree with you about "discoveries" in a
target area of the sky - it's a blast, and I have found that I miss so much
when I simply jump from one old chestnut to the next, never pausing to enjoy
what's in between.

Ernie Evans also mentioned his old standby method - offsetting by fields of
view in order to locate an object. You also have the closely related "drift"
method. That one is really fun, as it involves timing. How cool it is to see
a faint fuzzy drift into view right on schedule!

I've been here in west-central Florida for a couple of months now and we just
today got our first break from the hot humid stuff. Dew point is a low (for
us) 65, and we should drop below 70 degrees for the first time since I
arrived here. Very nice dark skies out there right now. :o)

Watch for those Perseids everyone.
