Thanks to Lew Gramer and his great efforts in making ametuar astronomers
observation reports spread about to the astronomy committee I have
finally founds somebody that comes very close to seeing what I saw on
the evening of October 10th.
I have included three email messages concerning the meteor activity of
the past week or so that has gotten the attention of some fellow
astronomers.
The first email is from a person who saw the bright flast of light in
the sky that I saw just before I saw the "Fireball" at 8:10PM last
thursday evening. This spotting was approimatly 95 miles away in
Groton, Ma.
The following messages are from two differant and unrelated sightings
that I think you may find interesting.
It seems as though are night sky has been pretty active lately above the
cloud cover.
Please read on,
Stars in your eyes,
Barry
greenwd@rcn.com (Anita) word:
"We also saw an incredibly bright flash in the sky on Thursday October
10th - I would have said it was at about 8:15 p.m.
We were driving due east and all of a sudden the sky was lit so brightly
we thought we were under attack! It was a cloudy night and we saw no
streak or debris and the white/blue light was gone immediately. The flash
that we saw was quite large though.
We were in Groton, Massachusetts.
I was pleased to read the email from Barry Martasian, because no-one
else that I know saw this event.
I have now reported this on

Barry,
This is likely just an interesting coincidence, but an actual meteor
impact was apparently witnessed at the Okie-Tex Star Party --- 3 or 4
days before your event. A couple of largish chunks traveling together?
See message 1025 on the AAAAstronomy yahoogroup.

Gentlemen,
This may or may not be related to the events you describe, but Friday
evening (Oct 11, 2002) as me and my family were driving up to Halfway,
Missouri we (my wife and I) saw an extremely brillaint green streak
falling down from the sky dropping apparently very close to the ground
before disintegrating. We were heading WNW with the meteor being visible
in the same direction. Shortly (~10 minutes) after that event we saw
another very bright meteor, appearing orange, falling due west also
breaking up into visibly smaller fragments. The time was ~8:30-8:45 pm
CDT. Both meteors were very bright and would have been seen with the
worst of light pollution.
We still have a month to go before the Leonid max. approaches...
