Re: (SNES) Leonid Report

Started watching for meteors at 22:30 Monday night under mostly cloudy
conditions-- observed until 12:30: Not one meteor seen. At 03:00 Tuesday
checked sky again-- hazy sky & bright moon, limiting mag 3.5. Saw 4 Leonids
in 15', brightest 0.0 mag.

Went back to bed until 04:00. Observed again from 04:15 to 06:00. Sky
conditions poor to north, but Leo & Ursa Major clearly seen most of the
time. Limiting mag 3.5. Saw about 15 Leonid meteors during this time
interval. No noticeable rate increase as peak time approached. There was a
slight but discernible aurora display visible at 05:15 until dawn
intervened. Venus was very brilliant although blurry through light clouds in
the SE.

Even dressed warmly, the chill air was getting to me so I said good morning
to Jupiter and Venus and went back to the sack.

Last year's shower was great although cut short by morning twilight, almost
on par with the magnificent 1957 Perseid shower I observed. I have
observed the Leonids since 1955 and rarely ever saw any of its meteors until
2000!
