Re: (SNES) Daylight Sighting of Saturn

Les, this has been an interest of mine since I first
saw Venus in daylight at Misquamicut back in the days
of wooden optics. The technique I use now is to aim
my (properly filtered of course) scope at the sun, set
the setting circles and move the scope to the
coordinates of the planet. Venus is eyeball visible
looking along the scope barrel, Jupiter easy in the
finder and with binos. I've yet to naked eye Jupiter,
my naked eyes are not what they once were. Even well
clothed, they aren't so sharp! Saturn usually takes a
bit of hunting with a wide field eyepiece. I do this
for Astronomy Day and things like that here in
Pensacola, folks always seem tickled to see planets in
daylight. I'll get Mars in a couple months and
perhaps Mercury towards the end of April. I was able
to follow Venus throughout inferior conjunction in
2001 when it passed ~8 degrees north of the sun. Huge
crescent. No matter how many times you do this, it's
still a bit of a thrill to see things in daylight.
