RE: (SNES) Daylight Sighting of Saturn
Saturn is indeed difficult, Ernie. I've marked my
driveway to position my tripod legs for good polar
alignment, but even with that it takes a while to get
it. Low contrast against the daytime sky. As it gets
further from Jupiter it's getting worse, since I've
found it easiest to hop from Jupiter to Saturn. Going
from the sun to Jupiter and checking the setting
circles again allows me to figure out how much of a
fudge factor I need. It still takes me a while, 20
minutes is not unusual. And another 20 when I
invariably lose it because I just HAVE to be a
bonehead and put a stronger eyepiece on, can't leave
well enough alone. One thing I haven't thought of
till just now is somewhat of a drift alignment using
Venus. As I write this Saturday morning we have clear
skies (okay, less cloudy), if it lasts a bit I want to
check out the large sunspot group and get a look at
Venus. Mercury's a bit too close to the sun to try
("Hey Dad, there's smoke coming from your eyepiece").
