I couldn't find elements for comet Benett either.  I
think you might mean comet West, which was visible
about then.  Couldn't find elements for it either. 
I remember Benett well, woke my folks up at 3AM to
come out and see it (I was living in Westerly also, 15
and a full head of hair!  My 3" reflector is still at
my folks' house on Hubbard St.)  I believe it was
easily 60 degrees in altitude and roughly on the
meridian at that time.  On March 15, 1976 I was a
young sailor, repairing binoculars and other optical
instruments in the Navy.  March 15 was the date my
ship, USS Jason, arrived in Subic Bay, Philippines.  I
know this all doesn't help your efforts much, but it
refreshes fond memories.
