(SNES) Lunar Eclipse on May 15/16
Hi,
It will almost certainly be cloudy but the lunar eclipse should take place on
Thursday/Friday night starting at 8:15 PM with just the very slightest darking of the
Moon's limb. By 9:22 PM the Earth's shadow should have completely passed over the Moon's
face. At 9:47 PM the Earth's shadow should be as close to centered as it will get in this
eclipse. In fact, the Earth will be equator will be slightly below the Sun's equator as
seen from the Moon meaning that the northern edge of the Moon will be slightly brighter
throughout the eclipse. The Earth's shadow will pass off the Moon starting at 11:12 PM and
leave entirely by 18 minutes after midnight. These time were calculated for FDO this
Thursday/Friday. As always your location will have
a slight alteration in the times. Don't forget that unlike a solar eclipse, the darkening
limb is very diffuse. It is often hard to tell that anything is happening until the eclipse
is well underway. The Moon never is totally dark. The Earth's atmosphere acts as a
refracting lens bending light rays from the Sun around the Earth onto the Moon.
