Subject: (SNES) Thursday's Lunar Eclipse
Date: Sat, 17 May 2003 02:05:21 +0000
We had a bit of luck at Seagrave Observatory -- the cloud cover opened up
for a few hours.
About 30 people (public, Skyscrapers and ATMoBs) showed up at Seagrave
Observatory in N. Scituate, RI, to observe the eclipse. It was cloudy when
most of the people showed up around 8:30 PM. By the start of the penumbral
phase of the eclipse, the clouds cleared! At first there was just a faint
shading on the lower left quadrant of the moon as it entered the earth's
shadow.
When the moon moved into the umbra, there was a distinct edge to the shadow
when viewed through binoculars. There was a very faint reddish color as
the eclipse progressed when viewed through binoculars and a 4" refractor
and a 4" reflector, but it did not get all that red even in the total
eclipse phase. The red color was definitely visible with just the eye
during totality.
Several members didn't bring their cameras because they though the whole
thing was going to be clouded out, but some did bring digital cameras and
took images during the eclipse. They will be posted on the Skyscrapers web
site soon: www.theskyscrapers.org
