(SNES) Still in awe
Thanks to Les, who gave me a call when he saw the aurora, I've finally
seen it for myself, and wow, what a show!
I watched for about 10 minutes from my place, happily showing my son
and neighbor, then my son and I went over to a friend's house, which may
be the darkest place in Narragansett. (They're hard to find.)
When we got there, things were at a low, and for a while I thought it
was a by-product of my not-yet-dark-adapted eyes that the sky looked
a little red between the stars, even in the binoculars.
Then things kicked into high gear, with huge sheets of red appearing
within moments, with bands of green and white slowly moving through.
White streams of light shot through like smoke, growing longer and
longer to end in an expanding "explosion" of light at the zenith.
We watched for an hour from that dark spot, eventually watching the sky
fade to just the slightest tinges of red. I was awed, and even my teenage
son was impressed byt the majesty of the show.
Les, I can't thank you enough for that phone call - I would have hated to
have missed this spectacular show!
